Representative Benjamin Collings, of Portland, co-sponsored by Representative Valli Geiger, of Rockland, have introduced a bill to increase the hourly minimum wage from its current level, $13.80, to $15 at the start of 2024.
Opponents wonder if the bill would negatively impact Maine’s businesses and overall economy.
Here’s the summary of the bill:
This bill increases the minimum hourly wage to $15 per hour starting January 1, 2024. Beginning January 1, 2025 to and including January 1, 2033, the minimum hourly wage is increased by $1 per hour or by the increase in the cost of living, whichever is greater. On 27 January 1, 2034 and every year thereafter, the minimum wage increases by the increase, if any, in the cost of living.
