Rumford Police say 23-year-old Sean Dyment of Canton, who was reportedly armed with a rifle, died after being shot by deputies in Rumford.

The incident remains under investigation.

From the Rumford Police Department:

At approximately 8:21 p.m. on Monday evening, officers from the Rumford Police and Oxford County Sheriff’s Office were interviewing a citizen in front of the Rumford Police Station at 150 River Street who had concerns about being followed around town by a vehicle not known to the citizen. During the interview, a vehicle matching the description of the suspect vehicle drove up in front of the police station and confronted officers with a rifle. Shots were fired by two officers and the male was subsequently transported by Med-Care Ambulance to the Rumford Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 8:45 p.m. The male has been identified as Sean B. Dyment, 23 of Canton, Maine.
The two officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave pending an investigation by the Attorney General’s Office. Those officers are Oxford County Sheriff’s Deputy Corporal Joshua Aylward and Deputy Matthew Steinort.
