From the Maine State Police on yesterday’s tragedy:

On Thursday, September 23, 2021 at approximately 4:30 a.m. Deputy Gross responded to a crash on Rt. 3 in Trenton. The driver of the crashed vehicle had fled the scene, in his car, prior to Deputy Gross’ arrival. At approximately 5:15 a.m. while Deputy Gross was picking up debris from the road he was struck from behind by a small pick-up truck. No charges are expected to be filed against the driver of the pick-up truck.

At approximately 9:00 a.m. Thursday morning Maine State Police located the driver of the vehicle who fled the scene a short distance away on Route 3.

20-year-old Thorin Smith of Bar Harbor was found in his car, sleeping.

Smith was charged with leaving the scene of an accident, illegal use of drug paraphernalia and illegal possession of alcohol by a minor.

Our thoughts are with the family and friends of Deputy Gross and the men and women of the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office as they navigate this unexpected and difficult loss.
