All week long leading up to the Lawrence – Kennebunk Class B State Championship Game, much of the analysis went like this. “They’re mirror images of each other.” “Lawrence is Kennebunk and Kennebunk is Lawrence.” The coaches agreed, the players agreed, fans agreed. It was that spider man meme we see all the time on a football field.

Well, the Lawrence Bulldogs Spiderman got caught up in the web of the Kennebunk Rams Spiderman and the Rams beat Lawrence, 40-20 to win the Class B Football Championship Saturday at Fitzpatrick Stadium in Portland. Lawrence didn’t have to play catch up football very much this season but they did on Saturday. Kennebunk scored first on a 12 yard touchdown run in the 1st quarter to take a 7-0 lead. However, Lawrence came back in their best display of Lawrence power football this season by going on a 17 play, 82 yard drive to tie the game on a Michael Hamlin 7 yard TD run. Kennebunk came right back and answered the Lawrence score with a Brady Stone 15 yard touchdown dash and the Rams led again, 14-7. That lead didn’t last long as Lawrence took the ball right down the field and tied the game up at 14-14 with 41 seconds left on a Michael Hamlin touchdown pass that deflected in the end zone right into Gavin Lunt’s hands. So, the teams went into the locker room at halftime all tied up at 14 all.

In the second half, the Kennebunk Spiderman exerted it’s will and dominated the final 24 minutes. Jonah Barstow ripped off a 55 yard run to set up a Brady Stone 7 yard touchdown run and the Rams took the lead for good, 21-14. Then Kennebunk turned the moose loose and took a two score lead as Moose Keys went 8 yards for a score and Kennebunk lead 27-14. Lawrence showed some grit and came right back and scored on a Colton Carter TD run and Lawrence was back within one score at 27-20. However, Lawrence was done scoring for the day and the Rams put the game away on an Moose Keys 46 yard scamper and Austin West ran it in on a 15 yard touchdown run to make it 40-20 and the Bulldogs dreams of winning their first state championship since 2006 were dashed.

While beating the Bulldogs at their own game, the Rams outgained Lawrence on the ground, 369-164. Jonah Barstow led the way with 23 carries for 167 yards. Moose Keys had 97 yards rushing on 8 carries and Austin West chipped in with 52 yards. Lawrence was hampered by the loss of their outstanding fullback, Gaige Martin who left the game with an ankle injury in the first quarter and never returned. Lawrence was led on the ground by Colton Carter with had 14 carries for 73 yards and a score.

While winning it’s first state championship since 1991, Kennebunk finished the season at 10-1. Lawrence finished it’s 2023 season at 8-3.
