A goal of football coaches is to make opposing offenses one dimensional…but not if it’s the Lawrence rushing attack. On a windy day in Winthrop it was going to be tough to throw the ball
effectively, so Lawrence didn’t. Michael Hamlin was 0-4 on the day and it did not matter as the tough Bulldog rushing attack ground down the Rams’ defense on the way to a 27-7 win and a trip to the Class B State title game.
In the regular season meeting between Cony and Lawrence the Bulldogs ran 60 times for 501 yards but the Rams defense had suffered several injuries after a tough game at Messalonskee. Cony had a tough game at Messalonskee again to get to the Region Title game, with no injuries, but the result was the same as the Bulldogs ran 59 times for 497 yards. The trio of Colton Carter, Gavin Wilson and Gaige Martin combined for 490 of those yards and all four touchdowns.
On the other side was an explosive passing attack but Lawrence continued what the Eagles did almost a week earlier, forcing sophomore Parker Morin to turn the ball over. After throwing five
interceptions in the second quarter in Oakland the Rams’ quarterback threw four more against Lawrence. Morin did have the lone touchdown for Cony but didn’t finish the game after suffering an apparent head injury.
Morin finished 15-31 for 155 yards with four interceptions and Cony only had 48 rushing yards on 24 attempts. Lawrence has continued its stifling defense with nine total interceptions in their two playoff games, and has not given up more than seven points in their last four games.
Lawrence will play Kennebunk for the Class B state championship Saturday.
