According to the Maine Center for Disease Control & Prevention, a probable congenital syphilis has been reported for the first time in 3 decades.
What is congenital syphilis? According to the CDC, it is a disease that occurs when a mother with syphilis passes the infection on to her baby during pregnancy.
The Maine CDC says it was recently notified of a case of probable congenital syphilis. This is the first case of congenital syphilis reported in Maine in nearly 30 years.
