Volkswagen voluntarily has recalled over 271,000 SUVs because of an issue where the front passenger airbag may not inflate in a crash.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says the following vehicles are affected by the recall:

  • Certain 2021-2024 Volkswagen Atlas SUVs
  • Some 2020-2024 Atlas Cross Sport SUVs

The NHTSA says a wring beneath the front passenger seat can develop a fault, which could deactivate the sensor that detects if a passenger is on board. If that occurs, the airbag will be disabled, increasing the risk of injury in a crash.
